SITA expands its operations with move into new premises

Tanaiste Mary Coughlan

Tanaiste Mary Coughlan

Tánaiste Mary Coughlan has welcomed the announcement by SITA, a software company in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, of its recruitment of a
further 80 jobs over the next 12 months. It will bring employment to 150 people and follows the expansion of operations and a move into new premises in order to meet the growth in demand for its products and services. The Tánaiste was in Letterkenny to perform the official opening of the new premises at the Windy Hall Office Park. This recruitment is the fulfilment of SITA’s project as announced in 2005, which is supported by Government through IDA Ireland.

SITA is actively recruiting and will attend the GradIreland Graduate Careers Fair, in Dublin on October 21st. More information on its operations
and the employment opportunities on offer are available at www.sita.aero/careers.

SITA is the world’s leading specialist in air transport communications and IT solutions. SITA’s operation in Letterkenny was established following its acquisition in 2003 of Eland Technologies, an Irish software company.

An Tánaiste said “the expansion into the new facility, the growth of operations and the commencement of further recruitment is excellent news as it further embeds the facility in Letterkenny and offers additional high value employment to the people of the area. It is also a further significant endorsement of Letterkenny and the whole North-West as a
location where international investments can develop and thrive and it demonstrates SITA’s confidence in the area’s ability to support its
knowledge-intensive and highly-skilled activities.”

SITA is owned by the air transport industry and its partners, which include airlines, airports and air transport organisations throughout the world.
Its services and solutions are provided for every stage of a journey, from reservation web bookings and ticketing through check-in, border management
and baggage tracking, to departure, flight operations and in-flight communications.

Francesco Violante, CEO, SITA, said: “SITA’s development team in Letterkeny has consistently delivered work of a very high standard. When deciding on software development locations we are spoiled for choice but the high performance of our Irish staff and the support and cooperation of the IDA have convinced us to expand our Letterkenny facility and to bring other IT
development work to the site that might have been done elsewhere.”

“SITA is unique as the only global IT provider still owned by the industry it serves. Our solutions and services are vital to the well-being of the
air transport system worldwide from flight operations to baggage management. The benefits of the work carried out in Letterkenny are felt far and wide in our industry. The quality of the work done here in Letterkenny is outstanding and we are delighted at the opportunity to fill these new positions and cement our ties with the local community.”

“Early Warning System” for Telecommunication Masts

Cllr Mick Quinn of Sinn Féin

Cllr Mick Quinn of Sinn Féin

Donegal SF Councillor Mick Quinn has successfully secured the agreement of all councillors at Mondays meeting Of Donegal County Council for his motion which will lead to a change in the County Development Plan.

Speaking after the meeting Quinn said: The whole issue of erection of masts is very emotive and the concerns of our communities are paramount.

A number of masts have been granted planning permission by the council in recent times and there is a serious concern in some communities about what they see as the covert nature off the planning process in regards to the erection of telecommunication masts. It is vital that communities have complete confidence in both the planning process and their elected representatives.

I fully believe that by bringing this motion before the council and having it adopted by the members and implemented that it will go a long way towards restoring the communities’ confidence in both the planning process and the elected members.

The motion itself will ensure that all future applications for planning permission for telecommunication masts must be advertised in a local paper and must include all technical data regarding the mast with the application.
Applicants for planning permission will also have to hold a pre-application public information meeting and engage with the local community in order to address their concerns.

Quinn continued “ I was stunned by the prevarication and complete arrogance of the Council Planning Department who suggested that as a review of the County Development Plan is due to commence in July next year the issues raised by me can be considered then. The council also claimed that the present policy is ‘Robust enough’ however I do not believe that many people in Ramelton would agree with this claim.

In conclusion Quinn said: “Unfortunately the implementation of this motion comes too late for some communities, but we can at least ensure that other communities in Donegal will be more informed and better prepared to deal with the telecommunication masts issue in the future”.

More docs for Irish Medical Card holders to choose from

Mary Harney, Minister for Health & Children

Mary Harney, Minister for Health & Children

Health Minsiter Mary Harney, today announced changes to the entry provisions for General Practitioners (GPs) to the General Medical Services (GMS) Scheme which will allow more GP’s to apply for a GMS contract.

She also announced changes in the retirement provisions for GPs who hold a GMS contract or contracts under certain other health schemes. which will allow more GP’s to apply for a GMS contract.

The Minister said “I have stated on numerous occasions previously, that it is my wish to see open access to GMS Contracts for all suitably qualified GPs and this continues to be my goal. In the meantime,

“I have agreed, as an interim measure, to extend the entry provisions for doctors to the GMS Scheme. For the public, this will mean more doctors for GMS patients to choose from.”

“Pending the development of a new GP contract, I am confident that these changes will greatly improve access opportunities to the General Medical Services Scheme for younger GPs and will also allow a number of GPs currently in the scheme but facing retirement to remain on if they wish.

The HSE has estimated that in excess of 150 GPs could benefit from these improved GMS access provisions, which will be reviewed before the end of February 2010 to ensure that the desired impact is achieved.”

Lisbon voting on Donegal Islands

Lisbon Treaty voting has started

Lisbon Treaty voting has started

Bad weather hampered voting on the Donegal islands today, the first voting in the re-run of the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland.

Voting on the mainland takes place this Friday and polling booths will be open from 7am, until 10pm.

As usual, the island voting made the national television headlines, but reports indicated that very few of the 750 entitled to vote had done so, by early afternoon. And that dreaded word that we thought had disappeared from the dictionary – EMIGRATION – was once more being used as a reason for the poor turnout.

Two polling stations were on Aranmore at Aphort and Leabgarrow national schools, closing at 7.30pm this evening.

Voting also took place on Gola and Inishfree, but delays occurred on Tory and Inishboffin, because of transport difficulties and stormy seas.

Polling times were then extended on the two islands until 5pm.

Irish Red Cross responds to Samoa tsunami & Asia disasters

untitled
The Irish Red Cross today announced that it is accepting donations from people in Ireland to help with the emergency operation in Samoa, which was struck by a tsunami following a strong earthquake in the region overnight.
The tsunami and earthquake are just one of four deadly disasters currently sweeping across the Asia Pacific region, according to Irish Red Cross Secretary General, John Roycroft.
“Tragically, thousands of families in the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and both Samoa and American Samoa have lost their homes, jobs and in hundreds of cases family members. We can help if people here in Ireland wish to donate to the global emergency appeal launched by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies,” said John Roycroft.
Local Red Cross volunteers in all of these countries are working to alleviate the worst effects of the disaster. This operation will cost in excess of half a million Euro (585.470 EUR), according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent which is appealing for aid.

The Irish Red Cross is also very deeply concerned about an ongoing crisis in Africa, where a devastating drought in the eastern region is having a disastrous impact on people in Kenya Many parents now fear their children may be just days away from starving to death and an estimated 3.8 million people require urgent humanitarian food assistance. The Irish Red Cross is also accepting donations to its “East and Horn of Africa” appeal.

FIFA pull fast one on Irish

For the good of the game - We don't think so

For the good of the game - We don't think so

FIFA the world governing body of soccer have pulled what many think is a fast one regarding the 2010 World Cup.
With just two home games left in the qualifiers for Ireland, if they manage to finish second in their group, the deal was that they would be entered in an “open draw” which would see them compete with eight other hopeful for the remaing places in the World Cup.
But now the topteams are being seeded, to ensure that Sepp Blater and his buddies only get the most powerful teams in the World Cup finals in South Africa, wven if they do not top their groups.
No complaints about such a decision, if it had been made two years ago, but trotting out today at a press conference in Brazil, smacks of the kind of nonsense that makes people want to turn off their tv screens in disgust.
Shame on you Blatter – you could have at least pretended that yoo wanted to give small nations like Ireland an equal chance of qualification for the next World Cup!
