A number of Irish MEPs today met in Strasbourg with Commissioner Samecki on the flooding crisis in Ireland and requested him to consider the deployment of funding from the EU Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to help Ireland deal with the horrendous flooding experienced in Ireland over the last week.

The Commissioner reacted positively by indicating his willingness to send a delegation from the Commission to carry out an on the spot assessment of the damage.

In order to determine whether or not Ireland qualifies for this funding the damage may have to exceed a level of €972 million. Until the assessment is carried out it will not be known whether or not Ireland will qualify for the funding, but given the extent of the flooding and its short and long term consequences it is likely that Ireland will tick all the boxes.

The MEPs requested the Commissioner to establish if other sources of funding may be available.

The MEPs expressed their joint satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting and await developments.

MEPs that attended meeting were:

Liam Aylward (FF), Brian Crowley (FF), Pat the Cope Gallagher (FF) Marian Harkin(Ind), Jim Higgins (FG),Sean Kelly (FG),

ANTI-FLOOD MEASURES A NECESSITY ON FERMANAGH ROADS

SDLP

SDLP

SDLP Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher has called for the Department for Regional Development to develop a contingency plan in Fermanagh to ensure that large scale flooding does not close all three major bridges over Upper Lough Erne, resulting in chaos and traffic gridlock in Enniskillen.

Mr Gallagher said: “Firstly, I recognise that the floods experienced over the past two weeks in Fermanagh are the worst on record and extremely difficult to gauge in the prior months, however, I feel that a precedent should be set for how we react in the future.

“DRD Roads Service and the Rivers Agency must learn lessons from these floods and act immediately to ensure that at least one of the bridges over Lough Erne is kept open. The bridges themselves are structurally sound, but access roads have been flooded during the constant rain. These roads should be raised to ensure surface run-off and unhindered access is maintained during periods of heavy rainfall.

“Enniskillen, at the best of times, can experience traffic congestion and gridlock. To maintain it as a centre of commerce and tourism we must ensure that all precautions have been considered.

“I acknowledge that government departments are constrained by efficiency savings but the current traffic gridlock is affecting the quality of everyday life for businesses, families and schools, the most important aspects of any community. I feel that the department must find the resources to implement anti-flooding measures to the infrastructure of Fermanagh as a priority.”

Kite-surfer dies in Rossnowlagh

A kite-surfer from Cavan in his mid-20s was killed this afternoon in a freak accident at Rossnowlagh beach.

He was one of a group of students from Letterkenny IT at the beach when the student was lifted by the kite from the sea by a sudden gust of wind towards a  group of rocks. This resulted in the young man sustaining fatal injuries.

A priest from the Franciscan Friary gave last rites to the man. The President of Letterkenny IT, Paul Hannigan, a native of nearby Ballyshanon described the accident as ‘a dreadful tragedy’.
