Finn Harps summer camps

Finn Harps Football Club have announced details of an initial two Summer Camps during the summer with the possibility of additional camps at other locations. 

The first Summer Camp will be held in Letterkenny starting on Monday 19th July and the second Camp will be held in Finn Park commencing Monday 9th August.  Read more

Harney asked to pilot breast cancer service in Northwest

The Minister for Health has been asked to pilot a free breast screening programme for women aged over 65 in the north and west of the country.

The existing ‘Breastcheck’ service already provides free screening for women aged between 50 and 64, but Northwest MEP Marian Harkin says older women are being unfairly excluded from the scheme. Read more

Carrick office sees dramatic rise of suspected welfare fraud

The Minister for Social Protection Éamon Ó Cuív has told the Joint Oireachtas Committee that last year, some 6,400 anonymous reports of suspected social welfare fraud were made by members of the public to the Department’s control section based on Carrick-on-Shannon in County Leitrim.

This was a dramatic increase from the 1,000 reports made in the previous year.

Consequences for sex offender decision in the UK must be considered – Keaveney

Possible consequences of a decision on the sex offenders register in the UK yesterday for Ireland and in particular border areas must be considered, according to Donegal Senator Cecilia Keaveney.

Two convicted paedophiles won a human rights case yesterday overturning the provision to hold sex offenders details on the register indefinitely. It was deemed an infringement of their human rights by the UK Supreme Court. Read more

Statement from the Government Taskforce on Emergency Planning

 

The Government Taskforce on Emergency Planning, chaired by Minister Noel Dempsey TD and Minister of State Ciaran Cuffe met for the seventh time at the National Emergency Co-ordinating Centre regarding the ongoing issue involving the volcanic ash cloud.

 
Following the agreement of EU Transport Ministers and further assessment of the situation including discussions with aircraft manufacturers restrictions in Irish airspace have been lifted.

Compensation Chaos a Possibility says MEP

“Irish citizens stranded in other EU countries will have to rely on the Aviation Regulator in that particular country to enforce their compensation rights and this will undoubtedly lead to confusion and delay and possibly different standards being applied.

In this context we need a temporary EU co-ordinating body to deal effectively and efficiently with the situation.

HSE Culture of Secrecy and Obstruction Must Stop

Sligo Senator  Marc  Mac Sharry  has  issued  a  scathing attack on the “endemic culture  of  secrecy and the obstruction of the flow of information” within the  HSE.  

The north west based Senator was speaking following the annulment by the  Information  Commissioner  Emily O Reilly, of a HSE decision to refuse access to the Interim Report on Cancer Services at UCHG.

Minister must use legislation to protect under 18s from dangerous substances sold in headshops

Speaking at a meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has said that the Minister of State with responsibility for Drugs has no excuse for inaction on headshops.

He said that the relevant legislation exists to restrict the sale of legal highs to minors and this should be immediately enacted.
