Public Service Excellence Award presented to Letterkenny Hospital

A project by the HSE to develop care and services for patients who disclose recent rape or sexual assault has won a 2010 Taoiseach’s Public Service Excellence Award. The Award was presented to Ms Anne McHugh, Project Manager and Dr Anne Flood, Director of Nursing & Midwifery, Letterkenny General Hospital at a ceremony in Dublin Castle on July 8th.
 
The Taoiseach’s Public Service Excellence Awards take place every two years and aim to showcase and celebrate public service projects and promote innovation and excellence. Read more

Fatal Road Traffic Collision at Newcastle, Co. Dublin

Another tragic road death

Gardai at Rathcoole are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision which occurred at Lyons Rd, Newcastle, this morning.
At approximately 11am a 33 year old male was fatally injured when the 4×4 vehicle he was driving collided with a tree. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time.
The road was closed for a technical examination but has since re-opened.

New Qualification rules for the Back to Education Allowance

Sligo North Leitrim T.D Jimmy Devins has highlighted the benefits of changes to the Back to Education Allowance scheme announced recently. Revisions announced this week will facilitate more people to avail of this second chance educational opportunities scheme.

 

For the 2010/2011 academic year, greater flexibility has been introduced for those in receipt of a relevant social welfare payment.  People wishing to undertake 3rd level education who have been in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment for 9 months, may now access the scheme, or for 3 months if seeking a 2nd level course.  Read more

Noel King appointed Republic of Ireland Under-21 Head Coach

Former Finn Harps manager Noel King is new Ireland u21 coach

Noel King was today confirmed as the new Head Coach of the Republic of Ireland Under-21 team. King will take charge of the Republic of Ireland Under-21 team for the first time on August 10th when the team host Estonia in a UEFA European Championship qualifying match at Tallaght Stadium.

 
King brings a wealth of experience to the role. After a long stint in club management, managing clubs such as Shamrock Rovers, Derry City, Limerick FC and Finn Harps, King was in 2000 appointed manager of the Republic of Ireland Women’s Senior team. Read more

Irish WWI sacrifice needs remembered – McGuinness

The sacrifice of all Irishmen who fought in WWI should be remembered by unionists and nationalists, Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness has said at the popular MacGill Summer School in Glenties, County Donegal.

“Republicans have no wish to erase the memory of their bravery or their part in Irish history,” he said.

“Many working-class Irishmen fought in the British army at that time because of the unrelenting poverty that they and their families experienced.” Read more

Gildernew criticises Bank of Ireland job cuts

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has condemned the cost-cutting exercise of Bank of Ireland that is exploiting frontline and lower paid workers.

Ms Gildernew said: “I would firstly like to criticise this move, although it comes as no great surprise. I would also like to express my disappointment at the manner in which it has been handled. The information provided by the bank on this issue has been very vague and having spoken to some employees of the bank locally this morning, the lack of information is very frightening.

Major vote of confidence in Donegal tourism

Walkers on Sliabh Liag

Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan TD has today heralded a grant of almost €2m for the development of facilities at Sliabh Liag as a major boost for tourism in South West Donegal.
 
The grant of €1,998,500 will be used to fund very necessary road access improvement, walking routes, transport at the site and improvements to the car park.
