37 arrests in major drugs swoop

Dublin drugs swoop

Gardaí in the D.M.R. West and the Garda National Drug Unit have now arrested a total of 37 people (36 males and 1 female) ranging in ages from 21 yrs to 48 yrs.

 
All 37 have been charged and released on bail to appear in the following courts;
 
10 to appear in Ct 4 CCJ, Parkgate St on the 6th Sept 2010
26 to appear in Blanchardstown Ct on the 2nd September 2010
1 to appear in Blanchardstown Ct on the 8th September 2010 Read more

Public Consultation on EU Habitats & Birds Directives Must be Extended

Minister for the Environment John Gormley has been asked to extend the period in which the public can make submissions about transposing elements of the EU Birds and Habitats directives into Irish law.
 
Independent MEP Marian Harkin has requested an extension on the basis that a September 3rd closing date for submissions would not provide sufficient time for individuals or organisations to adequately consider the extensive documentation involved. Read more

Speaking following the announcement this afternoon (Friday) that The Keith Prowse call centre in Lisfannon, Buncrana, Co Donegal, is to close with the loss of 50 full-time and 50 part-time jobs, Fine Gael Deputy for Donegal North East Joe McHugh TD said the move will have a devastating impact on the area and will come as a crushing blow to workers and their families.

“This is terrible news and I would like to express my deep regret to all the staff affected. Keith Prowse is an excellent employer in Buncrana, an area that will really feel the loss of so many jobs. Read more

Cocaine worth €400,000 seized in Dublin

Cocaine seized in Dublin

As part of an ongoing operation targeting organised criminality in Dublin City, Gardaí have seized cocaine with an estimated street value of €400,000.
 
Members from the Organised Crime Unit supported by the Garda National Drugs Unit & local units attached to Pearse St Garda Station stopped a car at Cornmarket Place, Dublin 2 at approximately 12.45pm today (13/8/10). During the course of the search cocaine with an estimated street value of €400,000 (Subject to analysis) was seized. Read more

Cruise Ship to overnight in Killybegs

MS Minerva is due to dock at the Killybegs Harbour Centre next Tuesday and stay overnight

The MS Minerva cruise ship due to dock at the Killybegs Harbour Centre on Tuesday 17th August @ 07.00 will now dock in the Harbour centre on Monday evening @ 18.00.

This is the first time a cruise ship has stayed overnight in Killybegs something that occurs regularly in Dublin, Cork & Belfast harbours. Locally, it is being heralded a great success and hopes are high that other ships will follow suit.

The Minerva will have approximately 385 passengers and crew. This represents a great opportunity for local businesses and tourism providers to showcase the area and encourage further and even bigger ships to stay overnight. Read more

Donegal the “forgotten county” as more job losses announced

As many as 100 jobs look set to be lost at the Keith Prowse call centre in Lisfannon, Buncrana, Co Donegal, after the company announced that it was winding down its operations there.

The company handles ticket sales for major entertainment events. But yesterday management at the company confirmed to the local Highland Radio that some of the company’s operations in Buncrana would wind down over the next day, with the Buncrana operation officially closing on Sunday. Read more
