Now Sligo Rovers meet Monaghan in FAI Cup as well!

Sligo's FAI Cup quarter final opponents will be Monaghan

There was more than a gasp of surprise when Sligo Rovers were drawn at home this evening against Monaghan United in the quarter finals of the Ford FAI Cup – the same opponents they are to meet in the EA Sports Cup final.

Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers have been given a home tie against Galway opposition in the FAI Ford Cup Quarter Finals. The Hoops will play the winners of tonight’s Fourth Round replay between near-neighbours Salthill Devon and Galway United. Read more

Man killed in Mayo road collision

Gardaí in Claremorris are investigating a fatal road traffic collision  between a car and a van on the 30th of August 2010.

It occurred between 2.30pm and 2.45pm on the main Claremorris to Ballyhaunis road (N60) at the townland of Cuilmore.

Gardai have this evening named the man killed in this afternoons crash, as 61 year old Peter Meenan from Ballyhaunis.

IRFU confirm Rugby World Cup warm up fixtures

Ireland will play Scotland at Murrayfield in August next year in the first of their warm-up games for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The warm-up match against Scotland is scheduled for Saturday, August 6 and is the first of four scheduled games throughout that month before the Irish squad departs for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Read more

Donegal ‘political’ marriage at an end

Olwyn Enright TD will not contest the next General election to concentrate on her family

Enda Kenny, the Fine Gael leader has paid tribute to Olwyn Enright TD, who has decided that she will not contest a seat for Fine Gael at the next General election. She is the wife of Donegal North East TD, Joe McHugh and is a young mother.She was also one of the front bench rebels that recently opposed Enda Kenny continuing as party leader. The decision brings an end to the only ‘political marriage’ in the Dáil, between sitting members, but the happy couple in real life are enjoying the first years of parenthood. 

It is not known whether Mrs McHugh and young family will now become permanent residents of Donegal.    Read more

Calls for improvements to cross border postal service

MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has called for the two main postal service providers that operate in Ireland to work together to improve the cross border postal service.

Ms Gildernew said: “Despite the fact we all live on one small island, postal consumers in the north face an average delivery time of between two and three working days when posting or receiving mail from the south.

“Urgent action must be taken to improve the speed, reliability and cost effectiveness of the cross-border postal service, which in turn could make a significant contribution to the ease at which business is carried out across the island, teh Sinn Fein MP said.

Courts to get tough on young drivers who flout the law

Young drivers who transgress the law on learner permits will face new sanctions in court, including the imposition of a mandatory monitored “speed limiter” as well as a strict curfew, it has been revealed.

The penalties are being introduced for learner and inexperienced drivers caught speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, or overtaking dangerously, offences currently punished by penalty points. Read more
