Disqualifications for drink driving

400 drink driving disqualifications were issued in Donegal last year, it has been revealed.

The Courts Service statistics show 403 disqualifications were ordered in Donegal’s main court district in 2009 which includes at Letterkenny, Buncrana, Dungloe and Glenties and covers most of the county, except Ballyshannon and Donegal Town. Read more

Govt new biz workshop for Donegal

The news that a Government run, regional workshop for new businesses is to visit Donegal has been welcomed by Donegal Senator Cecilia Keaveney.  The workshop will target small business owners, entrepreneurs and inventors with advice on how to turn ideas into new enterprises.

The workshops are entitled ‘Building a Business on Your Ideas’ and will visit the Mill Park Hotel in Donegal Town on Thursday 23rd September.  Intellectual property patents, trade marks, designs and copyright will be amongst the issues discussed during the seminars. Read more

Recreation of Pearse Column Walk

A large crowd of over 20 young republicans gathered at Altawark monument outside Roslea early on Sunday morning. Their purpose was to retrace the heroic escape across the mountains from Altawark in Fermanagh to Monaghan after the famous 1957 raid on Brookeborough RUC Barracks in which Seán South and Feargal O’Hanlon lost their lives.

The event, which was organised by Ógra Shinn Féin, sought to better inform young republicans of the heroic activities of the members of the Pearse Column and to commemorate the two gallant men that lost their lives in the attack. Read more

Townland names should be added to road signs

SDLP East Derry representative Cllr Thomas Conway said he strongly backs moves by party colleagues on Limavady Council to add townland names to road signs in the district.
 
He said: “We did this in the Derry council area a few years back and it has been highly successful, winning the support of ratepayers for meeting the cost. In fact, interest has increased sharply since then because so many people are now looking up their families on the 1901 and 1911 censuses and the search process is townland-based. Read more

Education more important during recession – OECD report

The OECD’s annual educational report underlines once more the “compelling evidence of the economic and social benefits of education”. 

It states that investing in education “is an essential investment for developing the long-run growth potential of countries and for responding to the fundamental changes in technology and demographics that  are re-shaping labour markets”. Read more
