North West teams will clash in 2011 NFL Div2 and Div4

It’s all systems go for the GAA NFL 2011 with the fixtures announced in recent days. And to whet the appetite of those in the north west, one of three games on the first day of the league is a mouth watering tie in Division Two between newly promoted Sligo and near neighbours Donegal.

Donegal and Sligo will compete with the likes of Derry and Tyrone in Division Two, while the other North west teams – Fermanagh and Leitrim will clash in Division Four of the league.

Donegal woman scoops €350,000

A delighted Donegal woman had that Friday feeling yesterday, as she celebrated her Lotto Plus 1 win at National Lottery offices. The regular Lotto player won the top prize of €350,000 in last Wednesday’s draw (29 September 2010).
 
“To be honest the only word that comes to mind right now is ‘surreal.’ It really hasn’t sunk in yet,” said the winner, who discovered her win the day before. Read more

Sligo Rovers Astro League Round-Up – Week 2

League action resumed last Monday night with Hargadon’s (Calry) taking on McHugh’s. McHugh’s had won their first game while Hargadon’s had been beaten. It was the latter who started better and they scored what proved to be the games only goal in the 7th minute thanks to a well taken goal from Ian Doherty.

Only the woodwork denied Doherty a second minutes later. The second half saw McHugh’s come into the game more but they spurned a number of good chances. Read more

Coleman receives first senior international call up

Great news yesterday for Killybegs lad, Seamus ‘Seamie’ Coleman who we are big fans of here at IrishDigest.com with the news that Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapatoni has called him up to the senior squad for the European Championship qualifier games against Russia and Slovakia over the next week and a half.

He will join Manchester City’s Shay Given as the second player from the north west to join the current squad and is indicative of the potential that lies ahead for Ireland.   

Stephen Kelly (calf) and Darren O’Dea (knee) have both been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland squad due to injury with Everton’s Seamus Coleman getting his first Ireland senior call up. He will report for duty with the rest of the squad on Monday next. Keith Treacy and Cillian Sheridan have both been put on standby. Carling Nations Cup fixtures announced

The Carling Nations Cup moved one step closer to its February 2011 kick-off in Dublin with the announcement of the fixtures and dates for the matches along with the unveiling of the competition’s new logo.
 
The logo incorporates the colours of the four participating nations and highlights Carling’s long association with football throughout the UK and Ireland.

Finn Harps battle back to earn Athlone draw

Finn Harps battled back from being 2-0 down early on to salvage a point against Athlone Town in a lively clash at Finn Park last night.

Athlone went ahead after nine minutes when Keith Cowan’s slip enabled Declan O’Brien to latch onto the ball and head towards goal. Goalkeeper  Gavin Cullen then lost his footing  and the striker had the simple task of slotting the ball home. Read more

The yearly ordeal of fireworks

Sinn Féin councillor for Erne West Phil Flanagan has appealed for the safe and responsible use of fireworks this Halloween.
Mr Flanagan said: “Every year many people dread Halloween because of the huge amount of fireworks that will be used irresponsibly.

The reality is that fireworks are causing serious injuries, and there will be a certain degree of fear in the community on Halloween night, when the use of fireworks will unfortunately result in people, and particularly children, being maimed and injured. Read more

Serious Incident at Industrial Estate Coolock

Coolock Gardai are investigating an incident at Newtown Industrial Estate in Coolock in the early hours of this morning, 2nd October 2010. 

A  27 year old man, who is believed to be a  polish national, was discovered on the roadway in the industrial estate with serious injuries. The man was on his way to work in nearby premises. Gardai were notified at about 5am on the 2nd of October 2010. Read more
