Severe weather update

The inter-agency response group on severe weather met this morning. The group reviewed reports from the various agencies regarding issues relating to the severe weather.
 
Met Eireann reported that there is no sign of the wintry weather abating and last night, air temperatures of between -2 and –9 were recorded at weather stations.  There is no sign of a thaw in the coming days and this situation may continue perhaps even until early next week. Read more

15 years for Donegal man who raped five grand daughters

An 87-year-old Donegal man who raped and sexually abused five of his granddaughters over a 19 year period has been sentenced to 15 years at the Central Criminal Court.

The heard that the man methodically “groomed” each of the girls, starting when they were around 7. He committed his final rape last year when he was 86. Read more

DoE on the opening of schools this week

In relation to the opening of schools this week (29th November 2010) against the backdrop of bad weather conditions, the Department of Education and Skills has indicated that at present it is a matter for individual boards of management to decide whether local circumstances warrant the closure of the school. 
Schools are empowered to make such decisions locally without notifying the Department in advance. Read more

Extension of Work Placement Programme to Schools

The government has announced the rollout of the FÁS Work Placement Programme to schools.
The programme will allow schools to apply to take on one or more people for a work experience placement for 25-40 hours a week. 
The placement period is for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 9 months.
Announcing the details Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said that “this is a major extension of the initiative to help and support the unemployed. Read more

Final disgrace by FF claims Pringle

Cllr Thomas Pringle ran as an Independent candidate in the Donegal south west by election.

‘Our disgraced government once again proved to the Irish people, as if we didn’t need another example, that they are completely incompetent and have mortgaged us all and future generations to protect the EU and the German and French banks that have recklessly lent to our crooked banking system’ claims Cllr Thomas Pringle.

Cllr Pringle polled more votes in the Donegal south west by election on Thursday than Labour’s Cllr Frank McBrearty.

‘The agreement today (Sunday) with the EU and IMF will condemn the ordinary people of Ireland to decades of stagnation and debt’ said Pringle ‘ it will bring our total interest payments to over €13 billion per year by 2013’ continued Pringle. Read more
