Donegal road problems continue

Donegal County Council’s present stock of pure salt is 250 tonnes and an additional 200 tonnes of salt/grit mix.

1050 tonnes is either being collected or delivered to the Winter Maintenance Salt Depots throughout Donegal over the next three days.

New Bank charges – another turn in the screw

The decision of the Bank of Ireland to impose a range of additional charges for customers with low usage of their accounts represents another turn of the screw for hard pressed families, Labour’s Finance spokesperson Joan Burton has said.

“What is particularly objectionable about these charges is that they are structured in such a way as to impact most severely on the poorest – those with the lowest incomes, the lowest balances and the fewest payments.

“A bank account is an essential in modern life to make and receive payments, but it is understandable that those with the lowest incomes,will require the lowest usage and have the lowest number of transactions. Why should these now be singled out for extra penalties? Read more

NoWDOC Holiday Arrangements

Christmas is a busy time for everyone, with people preparing to spend this special time with their families and friends.  In NoWDOC, staff are also hard at work preparing for what is the service’s busiest time of the year.
 
There are three public holidays between Christmas and New Year which NoWDOC cover in addition to their usual evening and weekend service. While it is hard for the GPs and NoWDOC staff who may be missing out on this festive time, they are committed to covering out-of-hours GP medical care needs in the communities they serve. Read more

Earthquake latest evidence of Sellafield instability

SDLP leader and South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has said Tuesday night’s earthquake in Cumbria is the latest in a long line of evidence that conclusively shows the nuclear power plant at Sellafield must be decommissioned immediately.

Ms Ritchie said: “Cumbria is directly across the Irish Sea from the Northern Ireland coastline. People in my own constituency are worried as Cumbria is on the same geometric fault line as South Down and an incident at Sellafield, should that be accidental or otherwise, would have a huge environmental and health impact on people living along the coast here. X-Ray equipment to improve patient safety at Sligo Hospital – Scanlon

 The HSE West has confirmed to Sligo North Leitrim TD Eamon Scanlon that two new X-Ray systems have been installed at Sligo General Hospital to improve patient safety.

The new equipment will provide the Radiology Department at Sligo General with the latest and top of the range digital technology, allowing it to move on from the older system of analogue imaging. Read more
