112 – should be emblazoned on garda cars, ambulances & fire engines

The EU-wide emergency number – 112 – should be emblazoned on the side of garda cars, ambulances and fire engines, under a proposal put forward by Irish Northwest MEP Jim Higgins this week.

Speaking in Strasbourg on the occasion of EU 112 Day, the Fine Gael MEP noted Ireland’s poor showing in the euro barometer results which revealed that only 18 per cent of Irish people know that 112 is the European emergency number.

When Mary Coughlan was appointed Irish deputy prime minister or tanaiste, her supporters in south west Donegal celebrated like they’d just won the All Ireland Championship.

Now nearly three years later, there are some who believe the Fianna Fail politician may not even retain her seat in next week’s general election.

A ten point defeat for Sligo with three second half goals for NUIG in the Sigerson Cup was a tough pill for Sligo in Ballinode yesterday as they were just one point behind at the interval.

Mayo’s Peadar Gardiner, Alan Dillon and Ronan Rochford were the main players on the NUIG team that put Sligo to the sword. Man of the match Gardiner scored 1-3, while Dillon hit three points and Rochford was outstanding at corner-back.

The 35th-minute sending-off of centre half-forward Eugene Keating for an off-the-ball incident badly affected Sligo, who conceded three second-half goals. IT Sligo opened the scoring through Adrian Croal, but NUIG hit the next five scores. Read more

Celtic v Finn Harps tickets now available

Tickets for the re-scheduled John Kennedy Testimonial Match between Finn Harps and Glasgow Celtic are now.
 
The much anticipated match,  which was postponed last November due to adverse weather conditions, will now take place on Sunday 6th March with a 2.00pm kick-off.
 
John Kennedy is delighted the Match will definitely take place in March.  “Naturally everyone was very disappointed when we couldn’t travel in November so it great that both clubs can now focus on making March 6th a memorable occasion.” he said. Read more

Coleman looks forward to Cole & Chelsea clash

Killybegs man and former Sligo Rovers player Seamus ‘Seamie’ Coleman  is excited about the prospect of going up against Chelsea left back Ashley Cole on Saturday, and hopes to come out on top as Everton look to book their place in the FA Cup fifth round.
Cole is widely regarded as the best left back in world football, and the fearless Irishman believes these are the kind of challenges you should enjoy.

Coleman has already pitted his wits against the England man twice this season and can’t wait for his next opportunity at Stamford Bridge.
