Fire Service at ‘full stretch’ as wild fires grip Fermanagh – Flanagan
Sinn Féin Assembly Candidate for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Phil Flanagan has paid tribute to the Fire Service who he says were at ‘full stretch’ over the weekend dealing with wild fires across Fermanagh.
He said: “Over the weekend, there were a number of wild fires in various parts of the county, including in the Belleek/Garrison area and on Brougher Mountain between Trillick and Tempo. The Fire Service were at full stretch as a result of these fires but they reacted very promptly to each of them and dealt with them in a very professional manner, thereby reducing their impact.”
“Those who deliberately started these fires in the name of recreation need to take a good look at themselves; their actions could have cost lives, killed livestock or damaged property. Unfortunately, these wild gorse fires are a serious problem in Fermanagh every time there is a prolonged period of dry weather. I would urge people to be more responsible, starting wild fires is not a game and without the prompt response of the fire service, who knows what might have happened.”
“I would like to pay tribute to all those in the Fire Service who gave up their time over the weekend to tackle these fires. We are indebted to them.”

Tom Conaghan new Mayor of Donegal Town
The new honorary Mayor of Donegal Town is Tom Conaghan. narrowly defeated for the last seat in the last county council elections by Cllr Sean McEniff, he says that he wants to develop additional amenities in Donegal Town.
The former All-Ireland under 21 winning manager was elected following the election count in the St. John Bosco centre in Donegal Town on Friday night. He defeated outgoing Mayor Paul Keeney and Patricia Callaghan, the other two candidates in the field.
Mayor Conaghan fills a necessary void for the people of the town, as they do not have any county council representative on Donegal County Council and while it is the largest town in south Donegal, both its southern neighbours Bundoran and Ballyshannon have local elected councils.
Indeed, the contest was fought like a political campaign with posters cropping up around the town. Behind it all is the stark reality that the town has no official political representative on Donegal County Council.

Glenea 1 Gweedore Celtic 4
Gweedore came out on top of this Gaeltacht derby. Gweedore took the lead on 10 minutes when Tomas Diver took advantage of a defensive mix up and slotted the ball home. Glenea almost equalized on 25 minutes, but Brian Cuffe saw his volley come back off the bar and to rub salt into the wound Gweedore went straight up the field and Diamaid O’ Sullivan fired home to double their lead. Glenea pulled a goal back on 35 minutes when Ciaran McFadden headed home a Kevin McFadden free-kick. Glenea were denied an equalizer on the stroke of halftime when Kevin Friel cleared Ryan Carlin’s effort off the line.
