Calls for apology over autism article
Senator Mary Moran today expressed her disapproval regarding an article on autism written by Tony Humphreys in last week’s Irish Examiner.
“I am deeply disappointed by the assertions made by Tony Humphreys that parents of children with autism are the cause of their children’s condition. As a parent of a child on the autistic spectrum, I would strongly disagree with the article’s unfounded opinion that autism is caused by parents who are emotionally distant from their children.
“Frankly I find it insulting to parents of children with autism, who in my experience possess abounding patience and love for their children. In my own case I have four other children which would make the implications in the article completely void.
“I would hope Tony Humphreys will make a full apology for the hurt this article caused to parents of children with autism.”
