Donegal defeated but there were positives

Michael Murphy of Donegal, who continued to impress for Donegal until injured on Saturday night in Croker.

Donegal failed to capitalise on their good home win against Mayo last week with a weekend defeat to Dublin in the National Football league, under the lights of Croke Park.

Although the finals scoreline read 2-16 to 0-13 in favour of the home team, it was two late goals in injury time that made the victory more impressive that it was in reality.  

That being said, Tir Chonaill net minder Paul Durcan was on hand in the early part of the match to deny the Dubls on two occasions. Read more

Sligo Leitrim & D.S.L. weekend reports

In the Best Western Sligo Southern Hotel title race City United with a game in hand on current tables Boyle Celtic  moved within two points on the leaders thanks to this win at Sean Fallon Park against visitors Ballisodare United.

David Blaine was the hero for City scoring his first seven minutes before half time and his second and crucial goal sixty minutes into the game. Ibrahim Savage cracked home an excellent goal for Ballisodare United with eleven minutes remaining but City held out and now looks very dangerous. Read more

Tribute to former Donegal Councillor Jim Ferry

Donegal North East Sinn Féin TD, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has paid tribute to former Donegal County Councillor and Buncrana Town Councillor, Jim Ferry who has died today.

Mr Ferry had served on Donegal County Council for eight years from 1991 to 1999 and on Buncrana Town Council for over ten years from 1991 to 2002, serving as Chairman of Buncrana Town Council from 1997 to 1998. Read more

Men charged over Mullagh assault

Two men charged in connection with assault in Mullagh on the 18th March 2012
Gardai investigating the death of a 22 year old male following an assault in Mullagh, Co Cavan on the 18.03.12 have charged two males.

 They will appear before a special sitting of Cavan District Court at 5pm on the 24th March 2012 in connection with the incident.

Sligo Rovers take points in Monaghan

Danny North’s, having spent the last two season’s with St. Pat’s is already making a name for himself with Sligo Rovers after his  49th minute strike earned the bit o’ red a 1-0 victory over Roddy Collins Monaghan United in Gortakeegan last night.

Rovers were on top for most of the proceedings but they had a number of second-half opportunities going astray with Ross Gaynor striking the post from 25-yard strike and North and Lee Lynch also missing out.

Monaghan had a late handball appeal dismissed. Rovers now share top of the table with Shamrock Rovers, but they have scored 10 goals as opposed to Sligo’s 5 in the first four matches of the season.

Connacht name team against Munster

Connacht Rugby have announced the side that will face Munster in the Sportsground this Saturday.
 
Head Coach Eric Elwood is able to call on lock Mike McCarthy and prop Brett Wilkinson who have been involved with the Irish 6Nations team and welcome back John Muldoon, Kyle Tonetti and Henry Fa’afili to the starting lineup. Ronan Loughney moves back to tight-head prop where he has excelled this season and is joined in the front-row by hooker Ethienne Reynecke and Wilkinson. McCarthy and Swift renew their second-row partnership while the Academy’s athletic Mick Kearney joins Ray Ofisa and John Muldoon in the back-row. Read more

Ulster name team to play Treviso

Brian McLaughlin has named his starting team and replacements for the away fixture against Treviso on Saturday (kick off 3.15pm GMT).
Ulster have been boosted by Johann Muller (calf) and Darren Cave (foot) returning to action after two months on the sidelines. Muller has not featured since the Heineken Cup clash with Clermont on 21st January, while Cave has been unavailable since the previous week against Leicester.
Ian Humphreys has been recalled to the starting XV so Ruan Pienaar switches back to scrumhalf at the expense of Paul Marshall. Cave will partner Paddy Wallace at centre, while the back three of Stefan Terblanche, Craig Gilroy and Adam D’Arcy is unchanged from the last outing against Edinbugh. Read more
