400 drink driving disqualifications were issued in Donegal last year, it has been revealed.

The Courts Service statistics show 403 disqualifications were ordered in Donegal’s main court district in 2009 which includes at Letterkenny, Buncrana, Dungloe and Glenties and covers most of the county, except Ballyshannon and Donegal Town.

24 prison sentences or partially suspended jail terms were handed out for drink driving.

Three jail terms were suspended while two drivers were served with community service orders. A total of 379 fines were issued.

47 prosecutions for drink-driving were dismissed while 60 were struck out and twenty-two were taken into consideration with other offences.

Another 262 disqualifications for drink-driving were handed out in the neighbouring district which included court sittings in Donegal Town and Ballyshannon but also courts in Sligo and Leitrim.
