Clarke takes Open Championship – after 20 attempts

Darren Clarke celebrates his Open Championship success

It is incredible to think that today the British Open Champion of 2011 is not Rory McIlroy, but his fellow Northerner Darren Clarke.

It would have been more than a tasty bet a couple of weeks ago after the young McIlroy won the US Open and pundits were already carving his name on the famous claret jug at Royal St George.

Incredibly, this now brings to three golfers and four if you include Padraig Harington from the island of Ireland, who have won major golf titles over the past four years.

There is obviously something in the grass here, so expect a large deluge of visitors to visit us in the next few years to see what it is that give the Irish the edge.

His victory also proves that you are never too old to have a dream and for Darren Clarke – at his 20th attempt and at the age of 43, it certainly proved true!
