Communities stunned by Michaela Harte’s death

The whole of the North West is in deep mourning this evening after the news of a terrible tragedy on a honeymoon island of Mauritius, off the west coast of Africa. This follows the mysterious death of Michaela Harte, daughter of legendary Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte.

The death occurred less than two weeks after she was married.

Michaela aged 27, married John McAreavey, a Down GAA footballer, on 30 December. Ms Harte taught Irish at St Patrick’s Girls Academy in Dungannon, County Tyrone and was a former Rose of Tralee contestant.

Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher of the SDLP commented: “My sympathies and the sympathies of those I represent go to the Harte family and Michaela Harte’s new husband and his family.

“This is just heartbreaking news and it really has stunned the entire community, people are finding it very difficult to take in. It’s hard to put into words the outpouring of grief at hearing this awful news.”

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP, Michelle Gildernew also  expressed her heartfelt condolences to the family of Tyrone Manager Mickey Harte on the sudden death of his daughter Michaela whilst on honeymoon.
Michelle Gildernew said:
“It was with deep shock and disbelief that I learned of the sudden death of Michaela Harte, daughter of Tyrone GAA Manager Mickey. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Harte and McAreavey families at this traumatic time. Michaela was a beautiful and talented young woman who will be sadly missed. The fact that just a week ago she was experiencing the love and happiness of her wedding to County Down Footballer John McAreavey in the company of family and friends makes it even more difficult to take in that she has passed away.
