Finlay remembered for ’79 demolition of Donegal
Former Monaghan GAA star Kieran Finlay, father of current Monaghan star, Paul Finlay will be remembered in the north west for the display he gave in the 1979 GAA Ulster final, when they defeated a fancied Donegal team.
He died yesterday after a long illness and was considered one of the fnest footballers of his generation.
Finlay scored an amazing 1-9 in the decider that July day against Donegal before later winning a 2nd Ulster Championship and NFL medal in 1985.
That same day in 1979 a shocking traffic accident with multipe fatalities on the way to the game overshadowed the final.
Son Paul was in outstanding form against Kildare in the NFL clash in Clones last weekend, in which a half time melee saw both counties fined €5,000.
