Fire Service at ‘full stretch’ as wild fires grip Fermanagh – Flanagan

Sinn Féin Assembly Candidate for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Phil Flanagan has paid tribute to the Fire Service who he says were at ‘full stretch’ over the weekend dealing with wild fires across Fermanagh.

He said: “Over the weekend, there were a number of wild fires in various parts of the county, including in the Belleek/Garrison area and on Brougher Mountain between Trillick and Tempo. The Fire Service were at full stretch as a result of these fires but they reacted very promptly to each of them and dealt with them in a very professional manner, thereby reducing their impact.”

“Those who deliberately started these fires in the name of recreation need to take a good look at themselves; their actions could have cost lives, killed livestock or damaged property. Unfortunately, these wild gorse fires are a serious problem in Fermanagh every time there is a prolonged period of dry weather. I would urge people to be more responsible, starting wild fires is not a game and without the prompt response of the fire service, who knows what might have happened.”

“I would like to pay tribute to all those in the Fire Service who gave up their time over the weekend to tackle these fires. We are indebted to them.”
