Sligo Rovers Astro league – Plumbing & Heating lead the way
Sligo Plumbing & Heating continue to lead the way in the Sligo Rovers 11-A-Side Astro league as they were comprehensive 6-2 winners against the SRFC Reserves.
From the start the Reserves were on the back foot as S.P.H. settled into their rhythm. Mark Brehony scored their first and he went on to get two more. Shane Filan, Paul Keaveney and Michael Walsh also got in on the scoring act with Jarlath Murphy and Barry Carty getting the consolation scores for the Reserves.
The P.S.O. remain undefeated as they defeated Coolaney Celts 3-0. From the start the P.S.O. took the game to Coolaney and they duly opened the scoring in the 7th minute when John Delaney headed home from a cross from Craig Walsh.
Their second came shortly after when a corner was sent in and Keith Hennessy scored his third goal of the season with a beautifully executed overhead kick. They wrapped up the scoring in the game when Trevor Sweeney scored a goal, a perfect way to mark his debut.
The G.S.S. continued with their fine start as they drew 1-1 with Hargadon’s (Calry). This was a fascinating contest as Hargadon’s dominated the opening exchanges and they capitalised on this as they took the lead through a goal from Mick O’Doherty.
The second half saw the G.S.S. dominated the game but they were frustrated by the Hargadon’s defence and in particular their goal-keeper Stephen O’Hara who pulled off a string of top class saves. The equaliser did come though when the G.S.S. were awarded a penalty which was converted by Rory Guinan.
Gannon & McNamara Electrical recorded their first win since their opening game as they came from behind to defeat McHugh’s 3-1. It was McHugh’s who took the lead midway through the first half as Stephen Quinn scored with a well taken shot from distance. Five minutes into the second half and the sides were level as Darren Kelly was put through by Graham and he turned inside the box and shot home.
Eight minutes later and they took the lead with Darren Kelly again the scorer. Kelly completed his hat-trick with ten minutes left in the game when his initial effort hit off the crossbar but he followed it in to shoot in the rebound.
In the first real derby game of the league it was a clash of the two North Sligo sides on Thursday night as Lang’s Bar took on Wes Chem. A late start to the game saw Wes Chem penalised as they Lang’s were given a penalty goal. Lang’s defended their lead throughout the first half. However twelve minutes into the second half and Wes Chem won a penalty which was duly converted by Niall McLoughlin.
Two minutes later and they took the lead when Paddy Devins had a header which hit off the crossbar but Brendan O’Connor was on hand to shoot the rebound. Shane Stenson then added a third but a late header from Shane Feeney for Lang’s ensured a frantic finish to the game.
