Vorskla Poltava 0 (Ukraine)
Sligo Rovers broke new ground last evening when they came out of Ukraine with a scoreless draw against Vorskla Poltava. Not as traumatic as their trip in recent years to Albania, but the north west side are enjoying their globe trotting of recent times.
This nicely sets up a home fixture return leg, which will see a packed Showgrounds next Thursday.
Vorskla created most chances in the match but they could find no way past Brendan Clarke in the Sligo nets.
The bit o’red spurned two good chances after the interval when Alan Kirby shot over from just outside the six yard box. Raffaele Cretaro then almost capitalised on a defensive mix-up when he swept in from the right and controlled the ball nicely before over-hitting an attempted lob.
Victory next week could see Paul Cook and his charges book their place in the play-off round of the European Champions league competition. Now that would be delightful!
