Storms batter north west
The north west counties of Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim have been ravaged by hurricane force winds over the last twenty four hours leaving thousands of homes without electricity.
Enniskillen reported an upturned plane at St Angelo’s airport while the town’s Asda store also had part of its roof blown off.
Within the last couple of hours Electric Ireland (formerly ESB Elecrtric Ireland) have confirmed that power has been restored to most homes apart from isolated pockets along the west and north west coast.
Miles were forecast of up to 140kph, but it was confirmed that winds reached an all time high at Malin Head Coast Guard, where winds were recorded in excess of 160kph.
Falling trees and debris have caused serious inconvenience to date, but so far, the region seems to have escaped the ravages of serious injuries to its inhabitants.
