New Bank charges – another turn in the screw

Bank of Ireland

The decision of the Bank of Ireland to impose a range of additional charges for customers with low usage of their accounts represents another turn of the screw for hard pressed families, Labour’s Finance spokesperson Joan Burton has said.

“What is particularly objectionable about these charges is that they are structured in such a way as to impact most severely on the poorest – those with the lowest incomes, the lowest balances and the fewest payments.

Banks must stop penalising householders

Michael Noonan TD, Fine Gael spokesman on Finance

Fine Gael Finance Spokesman Michael Noonan TD has welcomed the successful stress test verdict on Bank of Ireland and AIB, but warned this has only been achieved at enormous risk to taxpayers.

“Having passed the stress test, Bank of Ireland and AIB can probably look forward to having access to funding at cheaper rates.

“But the banks can never be allowed to forget that they only reached this stage because taxpayers have put their collective necks on the line.

“We have seen variable mortgage rates creeping up over the last few months, even though the European Central Bank has kept its own rate untouched.

“The least that taxpayers should now expect is for Bank of Ireland and AIB to set an example by cancelling planned increases in variable mortgage rates. It’s the least that taxpayers deserve.”

Gildernew criticises Bank of Ireland job cuts

Bank of Ireland

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has condemned the cost-cutting exercise of Bank of Ireland that is exploiting frontline and lower paid workers.

Ms Gildernew said: “I would firstly like to criticise this move, although it comes as no great surprise. I would also like to express my disappointment at the manner in which it has been handled. The information provided by the bank on this issue has been very vague and having spoken to some employees of the bank locally this morning, the lack of information is very frightening.
