 Reminiscences by Soinbhe Lally

The Erne Bus Service, based in Enniskillen and providing a service from Clones and Cootehill to Bundoran, was founded in 1929 by my father, Maurice Cassidy, who came from Letterbreen Co Fermanagh.

The service remained in operation from April 1929 until it was compulsorily acquired by the Ulster Transport Authority on 30 September 1957 as part of a nationalisation policy of all transport services in Northern Ireland.

Maurice left home in 1909 to take up a scholarship at a teacher training college in Dublin but was dismissed from college on his first day there because he could not sing. Ashamed to go back home, he shipped out to Glasgow and got work as a conductor on the Glasgow trams. Read more

A mobile phone signal from a distressed craft on Fermanagh’s Lough Erne was the unusual hero to a stormy day yesterday in the north west – 25 miles from its initial reported position.

Despite a huge rescue search neither the Enniskillen RNLI Inshore Lifeboat nor Erne Coastguard Rescue Teams could initially find the vessel.

It had been enroute from Kesh to Enniskillen in stormy conditions that were totally at odds with the month of June just past. Read more

Fermanagh & Belleek shocked by drowning tragedy

Fermanagh and South Tyrone SDLP MLA Tommy Gallagher has expressed his sympathy to the family of the young man who lost his life in a drowning tragedy in Belleek last night.

He said: “The entire community is shocked and distressed about the loss of this young life in these circumstances.

“This young man and his family are well known throughout the border area.

“St Patrick’s Day was, as usual, a busy day for Belleek and large crowds were still around when he was seen experiencing difficulties in the water. One individual made a valiant attempt to rescue the deceased.

“Tribute must be paid to that brave individual and I would like to commend emergency services from both sides of the border that were quickly on the scene and did everything possible to locate the body.

“In fact it was close to the time when the search was due to end for the night when the body was recovered.”

St Mary’s Brollagh – Withdrawal of threat to close a Common sense decision

SDLP Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher has said the withdrawal of a consultation to close St Mary’s Brollagh Secondary School near Belleek in Fermanagh is a commonsense decision and highlights the role and benefits small schools play in their local rural community cannot be quantified by enrolment numbers.

Mr Gallagher, who highlighted the issue at the Assembly, said the decision is a victory for commonsense:

“The plan to close St Mary’s Brollagh just because it was the smallest school was an indefensible plan. At least now St Mary’s will be treated in the same way as all post-primaries in Fermanagh.

“When I brought the motion about the plan to the Assembly there was absolutely no political support for the decision. This is a victory for the local campaign group involving teachers, parents and the children themselves. People in Fermanagh and throughout the west should take heart from this outcome.

“I express the hope that in any future consultation there will be a more commonsense approach adopted from the beginning. The decisions regarding small schools must not be taken only on a crude financial basis. The benefits small schools offer their local communities far outweigh any other so-called disadvantages.”

RORY GALLAGHER has made a piece of history that may never be matched. He has won senior club championship medals at interprovincial level in both Leinster and Ulster and for his exploits during November 2009 he wins the UGAAWA Monthly Merit Award.

The much-travelled Belleek man who is currently working in Killybegs County Donegal arrived in Belfast before the 2009 season began and joined his brother Ronan in the St Gall’s Club. Lucky for Rory and the ‘Blues’ as he played a major role in bringing the Ulster title to Milltown.

It was in the provincial semi-final that Gallagher showed his true colours. He rocketed home two goals and three points to send Clontibret  out of the championship. In the final against Derry champions Loup, at Newry, Rory hit just one point but, to quote a colleague, “he played an unselfish game bringing his team mates into the match.”

His contribution to the victory went far beyond his one point as he contributed to a number of scores hit home by his team mates.

“I was delighted at winning the Ulster title and now to get the monthly award really tops the victory. I’m very pleased at being chosen by the Ulster GAA Writers for their Quinn-Insurance monthly award,” said Rory at a reception in the Quinn Group Enniskillen offices.

Former Fermanagh star Rory, who is set for a comeback with the Erne County, pipped his St Gall’s namesake, but no relation, Aodhan Gallagher, for the award with Cookstown’s Barry Mulligan also in the mix. Former All-Ireland medallist Chris Lawn, the Cookstown manager, also got special mention.

Rory Gallagher was presented, at the reception, with his award of an UGAAWA Sports Voucher, an engraved Belleek China Vase and specially crafted Silver Cuff Links from Omeath jeweller Garrett Mallon by Quinn-Insurance Regional Sales Manager Malcolm Crawford. He will also receive training gear from O’Neill’s International Sports and two tickets plus overnight accommodation for the UGAAWA 2010 banquet.

Fermanagh armed robbery condemned

Belleek was the scene of an armed robbery this afternoon

An extensive search is taking place on both sides of the border after an armed raid took place in Belleek, County Fermanagh today. Two masked men, one believed to be armed targeted the Bank of Ireland on the town’s main street.

SDLP Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher has condemned the armed robbery.

Mr Gallagher said: “At least two masked men, one of whom was armed, robbed the Bank of Ireland and made of with cash and a car was later found burnt out over the border.

“This is a despicable act and one which I condemn. Thankfully nobody was hurt during the ordeal, however, the mental trauma can cause a deep-lying scar. I hope the employees are able to put this behind them.

“This is the second robbery at a bank in that part of Fermanagh in over a year, after the bank at Kesh was targeted in February and I believe there is no justification whatsoever in this type of activity. During these times of recession people are all feeling it hard but to carry out armed robbery is unacceptable.

“I urge anybody with information to pass it to the police without delay. We cannot have armed robbers thinking they can target businesses in rural areas.”
