Irish Agriculture must not suffer due to German E Coli outbreak

Donegal based Fianna Fáil Seanad Spokesperson on Agriculture, Marine & Food, Brian Ó Domhnaill is supporting the position of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) and is calling on the Government and the Public Health Agencies to reassure Irish consumers of the safety of produce on our shelves.

Speaking today Senator Ó Domhnaill said ” The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and other public health agencies have confirmed that the German E Coli outbreak is not in any way an issue for Irish produce.” Read more

Donegal south west Fianna Fáil Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has been re-elected to Seanad Éireann, after taking the first of four seats for the party on the Agricultural Panel.

He was joined by fellow Fianna Fáil candidates Jim Walsh, Denis O’Donovan and Paschal Mooney, who were all elected this afternoon. Read more

Sinn Fein take Donegal by election seat

Senator Pearse Doherty wins Donegal south west by election

It was all fairly academic in the end as the long time favourite Pearse Doherty of Sinn Fein romped home to take the Donegal south west by election.Although the official count has yet to be declared both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have conceded that Doherty will take the seat.

The biggest surprise was the relatively poor showing of Frank McBrearty of Labour, who tallies estimate got just 10% of the vote, similar to that of Independent candidate Thomas Pringle. Read more

This evening Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill was selected as Fianna Fáil’s candidate for the Donegal South West By-Election at a convention attended by over 500 delegates.
 
Accepting the nomination, Senator Ó Domhnaill said “This is a time to put aside politics as usual.  Political games are bad enough in normal times, but they can be extremely damaging when our country is facing such an urgent crisis. Read more

Ó Domhnaill Welcomes Coming into Law of the Planning & Development (Amendment) Bill 2010

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has welcomed the coming into Law of the Planning & Development Bill 2010. 

Ó Domhnaill said: “I particularly welcome  Section 42 of the bill which amends Section 42(a) of the previous act, which provided that the duration of a planning permission must be only extended, subject to certain conditions, where substantial works have been carried out before the expiration of the original permission.

“I’m delighted that the new legislation provides for the extension of permission (for a period of up to 5 years) in circumstances where substantial works have not been carried out, but there were commercial, economic or technical considerations, beyond the control of the applicant, which substantially mitigated against either the commencement of development or the carrying out of substantial works.” Read more

Ongoing Progress on Cross Border Radiotherapy Unit

Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has been informed by the Minister for Health & Children Mary Harney TD that good progress is being made towards the approval of the business case for the new Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital.

Speaking this week Ó Domhnaill said: “I have received confirmation from the Minister for Health that she has agreed in principle to provide a Capital Contribution towards the development and also to make funding available for the provision of Services for Patients in Donegal.” Read more

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has confirmed that Pobal Scoil Cloich Cheann Fhaola will be in a position to continue to employ the School’s Librarian in their Junior Certificate Demonstration Library next year.

Senator Ó Domhnaill said: “There had been doubt over the extension of the librarians contracts in the School for the next year but it has now been confirmed that the position is to remain.” Read more

Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has this week said that the defective water pipes in the Magheroarty and Meenlaragh area outside Gortahork must be replaced as quickly as possible.

 

Speaking from Magheroarty pier Ó Domhnaill said; “The worsening situation of disruption to the water supply in the area is a major cause of concern to the Local Community. The Council’s Water & Environment staff have been doing their utmost to carry out ongoing repairs to the defective pipe network however despite best efforts such works are only a very temporary solution.” Read more

Progress on Access to N56 – Ó Domhnaill

Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has received confirmation in the Seanad this week that the Minister for Environment, Heritage & Local Government will publish public consultation guidelines on Planning Policy and Roads. This follows on from Senator Ó Domhnaill’s ongoing representations seeking to have the National Roads Authority (NRA) relax it’s position on objecting to once-off planning applications along the N56.

Speaking in the Seanad this week Senator Ó Domhnaill said; “The current position of the National Roads Authority objecting to planning applications for permanent one-off houses along the N56 National Secondary Route cannot continue, particularly when such objections are being lodged based on policy and guidelines dating back to 1982.” Read more
