Threat to post offices another blow to North West communities – McConalogue

20130509-200950.jpgDonegal Deputy Charlie McConalogue has expressed serious concern about the threat to local post offices, following reports that hundreds of post offices may soon be forced to close their doors.

The Irish Postmasters Union (IPU) has warned that as many as 400 post offices in communities across the country could be put out of business when the Department of Social Protection moves to a fully electronic system of social welfare payments.

Deputy McConalogue said the post office network must be protected and this can be achieved by allowing post offices to provide more services.

“Communities across the North West have already lost far too many local services. Garda stations have been shut down, community hospital beds have been closed, local health services have been cut, bank branches have been shut down, small schools are under threat and many retailers have been forced to close their doors. And now another pillar of the community, the post office, is under threat,” the Fianna Fáil Deputy said. Read more

McConalogue calls for reversal of ‘disgraceful’ Farm Assist cuts

Donegal Deputy Charlie McConalogue has called on Fine Gael and Labour to rethink their ‘disgraceful and highly discriminatory’ changes to the Farm Assist payment.

The Fianna Fáil Deputy said the changes to the qualification criteria for Farm Assist introduced in the Budget have already had an enormous impact on the most vulnerable farmers in Donegal to the point that for many, it’s simply not worth their while continuing to farm. Read more

Key services under threat at Letterkenny Hospital as budget is cut

Key services at Letterkenny Hospital are under threat as a result of further budget cuts revealed in the HSE West Service Plan, according to Donegal North East TD Charlie McConalogue.

The Fianna Fáil Deputy has said he is gravely concerned about the impact on patients of the cuts to Donegal health service this year. “Letterkenny General Hospital spent approximately €105 million in 2011.

This was an n €8 million overspend on their allocated budget,” said Deputy McConalogue. Read more

Children’s Minister has no plan on social worker numbers this year – McConalogue

The Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald has admitted to Fianna Fáil’s Charlie McConalogue that she has no plan on achieving a certain level of front-line social workers within the health service this year.

Deputy McConalgoue, Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Children, questioned Minister Fitzgerald in the Dáil today about the impending crisis in the social work service.

He pointed to the latest HSE figures revealing that 71 front-line social workers are due to retire by the end of this month, and the fact that the Government failed to have an extra 60 social workers in place by the end of last year as recommended by the Ryan Report. Read more

Deadline approaching for applications to Rural Broadband Scheme – McConalogue

Donegal North East TD Charlie McConalogue has urged Donegal homes and businesses without access broadband to apply for the Rural Broadband Scheme before the July 29th deadline.
 
Deputy McConalogue said: “I am concerned that many people in Donegal and across the country may unaware of the deadline for applying to the Rural Broadband Scheme. The scheme was announced on the 9th of May last but since then there has been little or no advertisement by the Department of who is eligible, how they apply, and when they must apply by. Read more

McConalogue uses maiden Dáil speech to address road safety

Fianna Fáil TD for Donegal North East Charlie McConalogue used his maiden speech in the Dáil to address the issue of road safety and the need for continued efforts to reduce the number of accidents and injuries on roads across the country.
 
Addressing the Dáil for the first time, Deputy McConalogue explained that this is an issue of great importance to him as someone from a county that has suffered so many road tragedies. He said his maiden speech provided him with the appropriate opportunity to discuss the issue of road safety as part of the debate on the Road Traffic Bill 2011.
