Queen symbolism high on historic trip to Ireland

Queen Elizabeth II pays tribute yesterday to those Irish who fought for the freedom of Ireland, in an historic symbol of conciliation between the two islands

Queen Elizabeth II continued her historic first state visit to Ireland today by honouring the memory of some 50,000 Irishmen and women who fought for the British and Commonwealth armies during World War One at the Islandbridge Memorial.

It followed her visit yesterday to the Garden of Remembrance which honours those who died in the cause of Irish freedom, Easter 1916 and teh War of Independence.

This afternoon, another powerful signal of reconciliation came about through her visit to the headquarters of the GAA, where in 1920 the British Forces carried out one of its most notorious acts of violence as they opened fire on a crowd attending an All Ireland final between Tipperary and Dublin. 14 people including 13 spectators – including two children – a player Michael Hogan after whom the Hogan Stand is named, were murdered in reprisal for the IRA’s actions earlier that day and previous night when they killed 14 members of British intelligence .

Queen to visit Croke Park – and it’s not a joke!

After years of it being the butt of jokes it was confirmed this evening that the Queen of England, Elizabeth II will visit the headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Assosiation Croke Park on her first official visit to the Republic of Ireland which runs from may 17th to May 20th.

In a statement issued in the last hour the GAA stated: ”The Gaelic Athletic Association has for well over a hundred years embodied and taken its stand with the mood of the nation, culturally, socially and politically. In unity with our players, administrators and supporters throughout the island and abroad, we were strongly committed advocates of the peace process, and we have welcomed, supported and celebrated the developing reconciliation which has resulted from the Good Friday Agreement and its endorsement by the people, North and South, in referenda. GAA presentations will be in Hogan Stand

The GAA has confirmed that both of the presentations following Sunday’s GAA Hurling All-Ireland Championship finals will take place in the Hogan Stand.

In the interests of safety and the health and well being of everyone who will be in Croke Park on Sunday, the Association calls for the co-operation and assistance of supporters and asks spectators to refrain from entering the playing area after both games.

As part of the match day arrangements it is planned that the winning teams from both the minor and senior finals will complete a lap of honour following the presentations.

Following this afternoons FIFA World Cup, European zone, play-off draw, the Republic of Ireland will host France in Croke Park in the first leg of the play-off on Saturday, November 14th with the return leg being held at the Stade de France on Wednesday, November 18th.
Republic of Ireland manager, Giovanni Trapattoni said, “These games are like cup finals, we have come through the qualification group and are one of only five teams in Europe with an unbeaten record, that will give us self-belief going into these games.
We have done well so far but over the 180 minutes we must give something additional and we will have to be even more concentrated and focused than we have been until now.

We have come out of a group containing the current world champions, Italy and have got positive results against them in both games. Now we face the 2006 World Cup finalists and our results to date will give us the conviction and the belief that we can get a result,” added Trapattoni.

Donegal meet Cork at 2pm on Sunday in Croke Park

Donegal meet Cork at 2pm on Sunday in Croke Park

The Donegal All-Ireland quarter final game for the weekend has been confirmed for Sunday with a 2pm throw in for Croke Park. Donegal’s oposition will be the Rebels of Cork.

Ironically, it was against the same opposition in 2006 when Donegal last appeared in GAA headquarters in the football championship, although their last appearance in Croker itself was actually the 2007 National League Final against Mayo, which saw them win their very first National league title.

Donegal’s last appearance in an All-Ireland semi final was against Armagh in 2003, where they were defeated, so the prospect of a semi final appearance is creating a huge appetite in the county.

So far, no referee has been appointed for the game, but there has been a rush of activity to get city accommodation over the last couple of days.

Following Donegal v Cork, there will follow the second All-Ireland quarter final, Tyrone v Kildare match at 4pm – both games will be broadcast live on RTE.

The Bank Holiday Monday will see the much anticipated Kerry v Dublin clash.

This Saturday evening, the final Round 4 qualifiers match between Meath and Limerick, will take place in Portlaoise.
