IMNO receives support over health professionals in Bahrain

At a recent meeting of the National Women’s Council of Ireland, INMO President, Sheila Dickson, put forward the following emergency motion:

That the NWCI support the call for an independent external investigation into the
arrest of the healthcare workers some of whom are Irish trained, in light of recent
events in Bahrain where 24 (women) nurses and 23 physicians (some of whom are
women) have been arrested for providing medical treatment to injured pro-
democracy protestors. They have been charged with “anti-state activity” as a result
of providing care to these wounded civilians. Human rights entitlements, medical
neutrality and the ethical responsibility of healthcare professionals must take
precedence over political issues in times of conflict. Read more

Most of 1,600 new Irish nurse grads going to UK

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), following a nationwide survey, has established that most of this year’s 1,600 new nursing/midwifery graduates have either left or will leave this country in the next two months.

The majority of these graduates are moving to England to start their careers with many of them getting their air fare, first month’s accommodation and a post-graduate course of their choice paid for.  Read more

HSE cannot depart on student nurse replacement rosters

The Labour Court, in a recommendation issued on Thursday, 16th September 2010, has stated that the HSE (West) cannot depart from a national agreement which exists, with regard to the replacement of student nurses/midwives who have completed their rostered placement.

 The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation had referred the issue of non-replacement of student nurses to the Labour Court for an urgent hearing, when it emerged that the HSE (West), as a cost saving measure, were releasing 376 pre-registration student nurses without putting in place the Department of Health and Children regulated number of replacement qualified nurses (188). Nursing staff moratorium must be lifted

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has today called on the government to lift the moratorium on recruitment for nursing and midwifery posts.

The internal report of HSE West into the effects of the moratorium on front line nursing and midwifery posts, has been raised on a continuous basis by the INMO with the HSE, as an unsafe and unworkable consequence of this embargo on recruitment.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg and reflects figures which are already six months old. Read more

Nurses firmly reject Croke Park deal

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), following a nationwide ballot including the North West, has voted strongly to reject the Croke Park Proposals, on Public service Pay and Reform 2010 – 2014.

 

The final ballot result confirms that 84% of members voted to reject the proposals with 16% voting to accept, with a 63% turnout. 

This result reaffirms, and consolidates, the earlier recommendations, of both the Organisation’s Executive Council and Annual Delegate Conference, that members should reject these proposals in order to protect the public health service and direct patient care.  Read more

Nurses to hold special meeting in Letterkenny

Nurses are calling for rejection of the Croke Park proposals

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) is holding a regional meeting this evening as the next part of its nationwide information and balloting process with regard to determining its position on the “Croke Park” proposals on public service pay and transformation 2010 – 2014.

The meeting, which takes place in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny at 8.00p.m., will hear a full report on the decisions taken at the INMO’s Annual Delegate Conference last week which decided that the Organisation is recommending a NO vote on the basis that the cut back in staff, of 6,000 posts, and the required reduction in acute hospital beds will seriously compromise patient care and the level of services available to the community. Canadian Nurses leader calls on Irish nurses and Midwives to resist all cuts

At the opening session, this afternoon, of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s 3 day Annual Conference in Trim, Ms Linda Silas, General Secretary of the Canadian Nurses Federation (which represents almost 300,000 nurses in that country) called upon the INMO to resist all cuts that damage patients or services.

Addressing the 320 delegates, Ms Silas also called upon the Organisation to confront government, whenever necessary, to point out the shortcomings of their policies and their decisions in relation to maintaining a safe quality assured public health service. Read more
