Mac Sharry calls for substantive action on mortgage crisis

More must be done on home repossessions

More must be done to help people in mortgage difficulties

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew, speaking after it was announced that over 1,800 homes were repossessed in the north over the last year, has said that lenders must do more to accommodate those having difficulties making repayments.

Ms Gildernew said: “The announcement that 1,800 homes were repossessed across the north over the last year is very worrying and shows that despite the huge bailouts that the banks have received in recent times, they are not showing mortgage holders much understanding. Read more

The Prevention of Family Home Repossessions Group (www.saveyourhome.ie) has given  a cautious welcome to the publication of the Expert Group on Mortgage Arrears Interim report.

Ending of 30 hour rule welcomed but other problems still exist

The Labour Party has welcomed the recommendation contained in the interim report of the Mortgage Arrears and Personal Debt Expert Group that the “30 hour rule”, which automatically precludes anyone working 30 hours or more from the Mortgage Interest Supplement, should be scrapped.

The Party also welcomes the principle of the proposal that the onus should be placed on lenders rather than on the State in facilitating a struggling borrower before MIS would become payable. Read more

Ó Domhnaill Encourages Use of Money Advice and Budgeting Service

Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has this week encouraged people who are in financial difficulties to contact their local Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) office or to contact the national MABS helpline number 1890 283438.

 

Senator Ó Domhnaill said; “One of the worst things for people who are struggling to manage their finances is the anxiety that they have no-one to turn to for help. MABS offers a very good service, providing confidential advice to those who are over-indebted to help them cope with their debt problems. The MABS money advisors help clients to assess their financial situation, make a budget plan and deal with creditors.” Read more

Sligo Senator Marc MacSharry and other members of the Prevention of Family Home Repossessions  Group  have presented their proposals to the Expert Group on Mortgage  Arrears and Personal Debt, recently established by Minister Brian Lenihan.
