Pat the Cope ‘deeply disappointed’

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP has today met with the EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Maria Damanaki in Dublin. The Fianna Fáil MEP is a member of the Committee on Fisheries in the European Parliament, a body that will co-decide with the 27 Governments on the Reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.

 
 
At the meeting Mr. Gallagher expressed deep disappointment with the Commissioner’s decision not to meet with the representatives of the small Island communities during her two day visit. Read more

Storm brews as fishing groups prepare to fight reforms

Irish fishing boats will have to record and land every fish they catch even when they are not in a saleable condition, under proposed changes to the Common Fisheries Policy due to be published within weeks.
EU Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki is expected to unveil details on July 13th of a comprehensive reform package which some Irish fishermen fear could set the struggling industry back even further.

Dungloe & Glenties Sewerage schemes to go to tender/construction

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP, has confirmed that the Minister for the Environment, Éamon Ó Cuív  has decided to allow the Dungloe and Glenties Sewerage schemes to go to tender.

The tender process can now commence by Donegal County Council inviting expressions of interest. It is expected that such will be invited in a matter of weeks. Afterwards a shortlist will be established and tenders invited for both schemes. Read more

Icelandic fishermen over-fishing mackerel

Iceland could jeopardize its bid to join the EU if it continues to over-fish mackerel, an Irish MEP has warned.

Fianna Fáil’s Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher also said that Iceland’s radical increase in mackerel fishing is having a negative impact on Irish fishermen. Speaking in Strasbourg this week, he criticised the Nordic country for upping its mackerel quota from 4,000 tonnes to 120 thousand tonnes over the last two years. Read more

New National School for Gortahork goes to planning

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP has confirmed that planning will shortly be applied for by the Department of Education for the new National School on a green field site at Gortahork.

The development will consist of a new single storey 5 classroom school, support teaching spaces, ancillary accommodation, with a total floor area of 972.73sq m.  Site works will include the development of a new site entrance, footpaths , on site car parking, hard play spaces, new boundary treatments, landscaping and a car set down area. Irish MEPs enjoy higher media profile

Coverage of the European Parliament in the Irish media has jumped by a hefty 22 per cent in the past year, a new poll has revealed. Almost 60 per cent of Irish people had “recently heard or read” something about the Parliament when questioned for the Eurobarometer survey, up from 37 per cent the previous year.

The surge in interest can in large part be attributed to the European elections and the second Lisbon Treaty referendum in 2009. Another factor is the election of five new Irish MEPs who already had a high media profile.

Genties Primary Care centre to go to construction

Pat the Cope Gallagher has been advised by the HSE, that the Primary Care Centre in Glenties will go to tender immediately. The project is estimated to cost in the region of €1.6 million. 

“Tenders will be invited within weeks,” he said. 

A period of 4-5 weeks will be given to contractors to submit tenders, after which a successful contractor will be appointed and work on the project should commence by October”.  Read more

MEP says EU solidarity key to Volcanic ash crisis

Speaking during a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP stressed that EU solidarity is the key to tackling the ash crisis.

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP called on the EU act immediately and to adopt a strong common policy to tackle the fall out from the volcanic ash cloud and to plan for future disruption. Read more

Calls on McDaid and the Cope to give up Ministerial Pensions

Sinn Fein Councillor Mick Quinn is calling on Dr James Mc Daid and Pat (the Cope) Gallagher to surrender their Ministerial Pensions immediately.

Cllr Quinn said, Dr Mc Daid received €22,487 from his Ministerial pension last year whilst Pat the Cope received €23,634. This is on top of the monies they receive as TDs and MEP.

Glenties & Dungloe sewerage schemes go to construction

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP, has welcomed the Department of Environment’s decision to allow the Glenties and Dungloe Sewerage schemes to move to the contracting stage with a combined estimated cost of €7million. 

“As all pre-tender documents are prepared, it is expected that tenders will be invited within a matter of months.  I am hopeful that work would commence next year. 

“These schemes will provide new wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations and sewers in Dungloe and Glenties to replace the present overloaded and obsolete infrastructure.
