Sligo County Board secretary Gerry O’Connor has played down comments by Eamonn O’Hara about Sligo manager Kevin Walsh, saying there is a “personality clash” between the pair, the GAA.ie reports

O’Hara was very critical of Walsh when speaking as an analyst on RTÉ’s The Sunday Game following Sligo’s shock defeat to London in Ruislip at the weekend.

“Kevin Walsh made big calls this year and last year and every one of them has come back now to backfire against him,” said O’Hara on the programme. Read more

Sligo GAA pay tribute to former President

Cyril Feehily, Chairman of Sligo GAA County Board has expressed sadness at the death of Paddy Buggy, a former President of the GAA.

Aged 84, the Slieverue clubman and Kilkenny native held the top
position in the Association between 1982 and ’84. He had previously
served as chairman of the Kilkenny county board and the Leinster
Council.

For Paddy Buggy the GAA was much more than a pastime – it was a way of life!

As Chairman of Sligo GAA and all Gaels in the county we extend deepest
sympathy to his wife Peggy, his children Bernard, John, Gerard and
Louise and his grand-children.

Sligo defeated by Roscommon

Roscommon 1-11 Sligo 1-8

Sligo were licking their wounds yesterday after a three-point defeat in Dr Hyde Park.

Sligo goalkeeper Philip Greene was penalised for apparently barging into Roscommon full-forward Cathal Shine as he made his way out of the small square, leaving Sligo manager Kevin Walsh miffed after the game.

Donal Smith converted the penalty, but Manager Walsh claimed the decision was shocking

Sligo were 1-4 to 0-4 ahead after 23 minutes, helped by Adrian Marren’s seventh minute goal.
But four points in succession from Smith, Niall Daly and Cathal Cregg nudged Roscommon in front before Smith’s penalty.

Johnny Martyn and Mark Breheny helped a Yeats revival in the 2nd half but Roscommon held on despite not scoring for the last 15 minutes.

Sligo GAA county managers re-appointed

Sligo GAA manager Kevin Walsh has been reappointed for another season

Sligo County Board last night ratified three football managers at one meeting. Anthony Brennan, Tourlestrane, will be the County’s u21 manager while Tommy Breheny, St.Mary’s will take charge of the minor squad. Kevin Walsh was reaffirmed as Sligo’s Senior Manager for the 2011-2012 season.
County Board Chairman Cyril Feehily thanked the interview panel who worked on the u21 and Minor vacancies and expressed his gratitude to the Club representatives for their unanimous endorsement of the three Bainisteoirí.
“This County Board has put a strong Management team in place at all grades” said the Chairman.

He stated that it was the executive’s desire to have the Managerial appointments agreed in plenty of time to give them ample opportunity to plan their campaigns and assess the talent available to them. “The lack of success in the Minor and u21 grades has to be addressed and I hope that these appointments and their timing will go some way towards achieving better results” said the Chairman.

He said that he was confident that a fully fit Senior panel, with the guidance of Kevin Walsh, would make up the ground lost in 2010 and regain their form for the challenges ahead.

Mixed bag on NW Sports front

Sligo Rovers set the pace for the weekend in the North West with an imnpressive  2-0 win over Shamrock Rovers at the Showgrounds. It was a wet Friday evening. The game was screened live on televison, but that still did not deter the big crowd that attended.

Yesterday, Sligo GAA followers will be remembering back to last year’s Connacht Final defeat to Roscommon in Castlebar and wondering, just how a year later their side went down to Wicklow, in the first round of the All Ireland GAA qualifier to Mick O’Dwyer managed Wicklow in Aughrim.

The biggest sporting upset in the North West was the defeat of Fermanagh to London in the All Ireland GAA qualifiers yesterday afternoon in Ruislip. It was a huge victory for the team that play each year in the Connacht Championship.

They had a good run in their game with Mayo, but few would have expected them to pull off their first championship victory since 1977. For Fermanagh, that semi final in Croke Park, when managed by Charlie Mulgrew seems an awful long away now.

This afternoon Donegal go head to head with Tyrone Will Jim McGuinness, his new discipline and psychology get the better of Mickey Harte. Many are tipping Donegal, which as we have seen in the past, can be a double edged sword. . . . their last Ulster final victory was back in 1992.
