SDLP West Tyrone MLA Joe Byrne has said the entire county is at a loss after the heartbreaking double tragedy involving teenagers Kevin Conway and Lisa O’Donnell between Pomeroy and Carrickmore on Saturday.
Mr Byrne said: “This is just heartbreaking. A tragic, tragic turn of events made all the harder coming in the mouth of Christmas.
“Two young lives have been ended in the cruellest of circumstances, just as they were preparing to make their way in the world. The whole county of Tyrone is at a loss for this and it has made an indelible mark on the people, even further afield, coming so close to tragic deaths on roads in Magherafelt and Armagh over the past few days.
The whole of the North West is in deep mourning this evening after the news of a terrible tragedy on a honeymoon island of Mauritius, off the west coast of Africa. This follows the mysterious death of Michaela Harte, daughter of legendary Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte.
The death occurred less than two weeks after she was married.
Michaela aged 27, married John McAreavey, a Down GAA footballer, on 30 December. Ms Harte taught Irish at St Patrick’s Girls Academy in Dungannon, County Tyrone and was a former Rose of Tralee contestant. Read more
SDLP Strabane councillor Eugene McMenamin has said a security alert in Strabane on Thursday morning defies logic and has only succeeded in disrupting businesses and traffic through a main arterial route of the town.
Speaking from the scene, Mr McMenamin said: “It’s caused quite a bit of confusion and disruption and immediately, we have to ask, for what end this has happened.
Man shot in legs
A 29 yr old man has received gunshot wounds to both legs during a shooting incident in Glebe Gardens, Strabane in County Tyrone, near the Donegal border.
It is understood the man who is a taxi driver, called to pick up a fare in the area at 11pm. He was dragged from his vehicle by a number of men to a grassy area where he was beaten and shot once in the left thigh. Read more
